Careers in FOCUS

We look for enthusiastic individuals to participate in dynamic and interactive workshops about their career that will give secondary students an insight into the world of work, whilst also offering them new transferable skills to increase their employability.

The Careers in FOCUS Programme is designed to introduce students to different career options, deepen their understanding of the working world and gain knowledge of the skills and qualifications they need to pursue their ambitions. The programme is made up of multiple interactive workshops delivered by volunteer professionals.

What do volunteers gain from the programme?

As a volunteer the scheme offers a flexible opportunity to support and inspire our young people through giving them first-hand exposure of what your profession entails. It is also a chance to share personal work experiences and apply your skills and talents with a different audience within a new environment.

What role do volunteers play in preparing and running a session?

Careers in FOCUS sessions usually last between 60-90 minutes, and are comprised of a short introductory talk from the volunteer about themselves and their career, an interactive activity to teach students different skills to do with the career, and a question and answer segment. This format however, is flexible and some centres may also invite you to be part of a panel event.

Planning and running a workshop with students may be quite a new experience and different to what many volunteers have done, especially with other commitments to balance. We offer a wide scope for volunteers to be as hands-on or hands-off with planning and delivery of the session as they require. We are also happy for you to volunteer as a group with your colleagues if you would prefer.

IntoUniversity staff are always on hand to provide support with the planning and delivery of a session and will organise meetings beforehand to ensure you are comfortable with arrangements for the day.

How do I register my interest?

If you would like to volunteer on the Careers in FOCUS programme please fill out this short form. Please note that most centres run their Careers in FOCUS programme between March-July and sessions run on weekdays. Once you have applied, your information will be safely stored on our database, and if your profession/sector and geographical area matches a centre's needs then a staff member may be in touch to see if you are available to support with the programme.

“I loved working with the kids and seeing their passion.”

“I liked to think I was helping leaders in the future. I remember the people that helped me and it's nice to give back.”
