IntoUniversity in Scotland

In September 2019, IntoUniversity and the Universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow embarked on an ambitious fundraising campaign to raise vital funds for our joint work. The Covid-19 crisis arrived just as our campaign was gaining pace. Many of our fundraising events were cancelled, and crucial conversations inevitably had to be delayed while we all tried to get to grips with the pandemic and its implications.

Initially we feared we might have to postpone opening the centres. When it became clear that the communities we intended to support were those most heavily impacted by the crisis, we became more determined than ever to ensure the centres became a reality as soon as possible. Our supporters felt the same.

In 2021, IntoUniversity, the University of Glasgow and the University of Edinburgh launched three local education centres offering ground-breaking support to young people in Scotland. Both universities will be involved in all three centres in the years to come, motivated by a shared concern for children growing up experiencing poverty and a belief in the power of education to transform young people’s lives.

Our centres in Craigmillar, Govan, and Maryhill add to the excellent long-term effort of schools and other agencies to support young people’s learning recovery in both cities. We are profoundly grateful for the extraordinary generosity of individual philanthropists, businesses in Scotland and grant-making trusts; without their crucil support these centres would not have opened.
