Anne’s story

Anne first heard about IntoUniversity when the centre staff attended a parents’ evening at her school, where our Weston-super-Mare centre is based, and she signed up there and then.

Anne is now a very active member of Academic Support, becoming involved in group projects to support other students. She is also a member of the Student Council and is actively researching her future pathway to find out more about how to fulfil her career goal of becoming a teacher. Anne is originally from Hungary, and spoke no English when she moved to the UK, so she enjoys talking to others when she comes to IntoUniversity, where she has gained confidence and made lots of new friendships:

IntoUniversity has helped me with my Maths and being more confident. For example, I started to talk to more people and be myself around them. At Academic Support I learnt that I should be proud of who I am and show people my abilities.

At first I was a bit nervous, but when we had our first day it was very nice, I really like the people at IntoUniversity because they are very supportive. I come twice a week because I can do extra things that I can’t do at home, either because I don’t have the materials, or the space. IntoUniversity gives me opportunities and here I get extra help when I need it.

I like being on the Student Council because I like planning things like big events, and for me the end of term party is a big event! I can also do this with other people and I have the opportunity to practise my teamwork skills.

I want to be a teacher in the future – either a technology teacher or an English teacher, so I want to study those two things in college and then in university, so I am working up to that. IntoUniversity is helping me to do some research on how I can do this. I found out that I can study English at Bath Spa University to become a teacher and also at University College Weston where they have lots of opportunities and my sister studies there also.”

The staff at Academic Support help with any projects that you are doing, are very supportive and they always smile. Also, just being at IntoUniversity gives you confidence and support.
