Daniel’s story
Daniel first started attending Primary Academic Support at IntoUniversity Leeds East in 2015 to get one-to-one support with his homework.
Daniel speaks English as an additional language, and staff have seen his spoken and written English improve significantly since coming to the centre. Daniel’s communication with both adults and other students has also grown considerably and he now proactively seeks support when he needs it.
“At IntoUniversity I get help with my homework and the tasks that I can’t do on my own. IntoUniversity has helped me because I have access to one-to-one support which helps me with my understanding of things. I have made improvements in Science and Maths as a result of coming to IntoUniversity because staff and volunteers have supported me with my revision. My confidence has also improved, as well as my spoken English. This is because of having to communicate with a variety of new people that I had never met before, including my mentor and other people that come to IntoUniversity who are now my friends.
Having a mentor that studies Engineering at university has helped me to explore this career choice as I was able to ask lots of questions to learn more about the subject which has helped me with future decisions. Mentoring has meant that I have been able to take part in lots of activities. For example, my mentor and I once took part in an experiment which involved testing an electrical circuit. This helped me to learn more about the subject that I am really interested in. IntoUniversity have also supported me by taking me on trips to visit different universities which have helped me in thinking about where I might like to study in the future.”
