Habib’s Story
Habib has been involved in a variety of programmes since S4 and IntoUniversity has guided Habib in considering and pursuing his aspirations.
Habib started attending Academic Support at IntoUniversity Govan in 2021 after finding out about the centre through his younger sibling who attended a Primary FOCUS Week. At IntoUniversity, Habib saw a significant improvement in his academic attainment and was keen to explore his future ambitions and pathways. He was paired with a corporate mentor from first direct, who has been instrumental in helping him decide on which courses he wanted to pursue, work on his personal statement, and prepare for his exams.
Habib is now pursuing a BSc in Building Surveying at Glasgow Caledonian University.
What do you hope to achieve by coming to IntoUniversity?
‘I come here to get work done. If I need help regarding homework or projects, I can get advice and resources, or even help with my CV or UCAS personal statement.’
How has IntoUniversity helped you?
‘The Mentoring scheme has really helped me with my personal statement. In the beginning, I had no clue what to do but my mentor helped me to plan it and I was able to write it myself. The [Secondary FOCUS] workshops at school about future choices and UCAS and the application process also helped to clarify things I was unsure of before.’
What is your best memory of IntoUniversity?
‘The best memory would be the bowling trip we went for the [end of year] celebration session. It was really fun and a good way to relax after a hard year.’
What do you most enjoy about IntoUniversity?
‘It is a space and environment where you can really learn and focus. If you ever have any questions or need any help, it’s never daunting to ask. Everyone is really approachable.’
Which IntoUniversity programme did you find most beneficial and why?
‘Academic Support sessions have been helpful for me to study for tests that are coming up or to do homework. I wouldn’t have the time or quiet space at home to do it. Being able to do it here has been really helpful and I really appreciate it.’
How has IntoUniversity supported you to think about your future?
‘It has helped me think about my long-term goals. Me and my mentor talk about courses I could do; I was debating between Accountancy, Architecture or something with construction, and my mentor has helped me make a choice and plan my studying for exams. They also helped me look into bursaries and the SAAS [Student Awards Agency Scotland].’
