Gray’s story

Gray, an Ecology and Conservation student at the University of East Anglia, shares their experiences of volunteering with IntoUniversity.

Gray and their mentee

Gray first worked with IntoUniversity Norwich when they were a University Ambassador on a FOCUS Week. They have since volunteered as a University Student Mentor for the past two years.

“From the start, the staff seemed kind and welcoming, which encouraged me to put myself forward for Mentoring. I loved the idea of mentoring; I hadn’t seen this opportunity offered by other local organisations, and I knew it would be a great opportunity for me to develop my confidence. I wanted to get more involved with educational initiatives, and IntoUniversity held many values that I support.

I have to say my best memories are watching my mentees grow in confidence, becoming closer to them overtime, forming inside jokes, and seeing them become comfortable with me. I loved watching my mentee recently have the confidence to speak in front of a group at the Mentoring Celebration at the University of East Anglia. I felt like I could cry when she did that; she wasn’t overly prompted, she just did it. That was a big goal for her, and I am so proud.

I have drastically improved my confidence and ability to communicate with my mentee in a way that is beneficial to them.

I recommend volunteering with IntoUniversity on a regular basis because it brings me so much joy. I love being part of my community and meeting my mentee. There is so much support and kindness in the charity, and there is so much to be gained from volunteering with IntoUniversity.”
